Rectal cancer is one of the pathologies for which there have been considerable advances in therapeutic strategy since the last publication in 2009.
This report includes a first theoretical part with an update of the data from clinical oncosurgical practice, but also a proposal for a decision-making algorithm for the management of these patients, written by experts in this field. Many of them are members of the Groupe de REcherche Chirurgicale sur le CAncer du Rectum (Group for Surgical Research on Rectal Cancer) and you will also find in this report the various prospective randomized multicenter trials conducted by this working group.
The second part of this report includes the results of two surveys conducted among AFC members:
▪ a retrospective survey aimed at studying the different types of management of anastomotic fistulas after conservative rectal surgery, as well as the medium-term outcome of these patients (conservative surgery for rectal cancer and having presented an anastomotic fistula diagnosed between January and June 2023);
▪ a prospective survey consisting of a “snapshot” of rectal surgery activity and the practices of each surgeon in September 2024 and October 2024.
