Optimization of therapeutic intensity : Associating radiotherapy and chemotherapy

Ionizing radiation has been used for a century to treat tumors. Chemotherapy was introduced more recently. These two therapeutic methods,supplementing surgery, have both proved their effectiveness, and theprognosis for cancer patients has been transformed by their contributions.
Still, rather than regarding them as alternatives, would it not be better to associate them, that is, look for the best treatment strategy and increase therapeutic intensity?
