In cancer care, it is essential to put in place a treatment system employing all the skills represented in the medical profession.
This work, edited by a multidisciplinary team of experienced doctors and carers, aims to describe the technical operations and treatments that are now carried out in the various structures ensuring the continuity of cancer outpatient care: hospitalisation for a day, a night or a week, and hospital-at-home care.
The first section deals with evaluating the status of the patient, both at the time of diagnosis and during treatment. This evaluation is essential to determine what treatments should be used and to assess patient tolerance to the treatments prescribed.
The second section covers the practical aspects of hospitalisation at home: work organisation, operational rules, and the details of special nursing care.
The third section describes the different resources that can be suggested during outpatient care: chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and pain relief as part of palliative care.
The fourth and final section gives details of how to provide outpatient care for each type of cancer, with emphasis on the need to work as a team to improve the effectiveness of treatments.
An accessible training and study aid, Caring for cancer outpatients will be of interest to all health professionals, both doctors and paramedics.
