The situation of patients dependent on psychoactive substances has changed significantly in France since the introduction of substitution therapy. Substitutes enable patients to tolerate the lack of toxic substances and to return to an emotional state that lets them readjust and make the most of the necessary psychological and social support.
This new situation means that we have to think again about the role of detoxification. How long should substitution be continued? How? And for which patients?
Detoxification is only a condition and not an indication of a cure. Its role should be considered in the context of the patient's recovery as just one stage in a long-term process that combines medical care, psychotherapy and helping the patient to return to normal life in society.
