Summary

Since heart surgery evolves quickly, it was necessary, 8 years after the 1st edition, to update this monograph.

This 2nd edition is a veritable reference work in French, filling an unnecessary void.

More than merely French, it is a francophone work calling upon a broad panel of French, Belgian and Canadian experts.

All of the major aspects of anaesthesia and resuscitation in heart surgery are addressed and grouped in different sections, from pre-operative patient evaluation to serious complications of resuscitation and including monitoring and strategies of peri-operative management.

New technological developments (mini-invasive aortic and mitral procedures, monitoring of brain function) and pathophysiological developments (peri-operative ventilation strategies, SIRS, congenital cardiopathies in adults) are discussed broadly. As the work aims to be exhaustive, rarely addressed topics such as the management of obese or elderly patients, chronic post-operative pain in heart surgery or post-operative atrial fibrillation are also included, and the specificities of paediatric cardiac anaesthesia have not been omitted.
